Song Picks of the Week – August 11, 2020

Salt Lake Bard Song Pick of the Week featuring Oswald & Goeckeritz

This week features Moon Over Ruined Castle performed by Oswald & Goeckeritz, Best of Me by Arizona Sun and Day Dates (Turn Into Night Dates) by Tony Holiday.

Each week, Salt Lake Bard posts our favorite song discoveries — both new and old —from local artists around the Intermountain West. Check out our three picks below, find past selections in our archive of past Song Picks of the Week (SPW), and stream the Bard Spotify playlist, which contains all of our SPW selections.

1) Moon Over Ruined Castle | Rentaro Taki, performed by Oswald & Goeckeritz | Classical
by Scott Cullins

I came across this stunning rendition of Moon Over Ruined Castle while enjoying my morning coffee on my back yard deck. The piece is performed by The Oswald Goeckeritz Duo (Tamara Oswald and Jeannine Goeckeritz). These two are amazing musicians who have traveled the world performing. 2) Best of Me | Arizona Sun | Country Rock
by Scott Cullins

Arizona Sun was formed by three lifelong friends who grew up in Arizona and one by one found their way to Utah 20 years ago. Today, with a seven piece lineup, Arizona Sun seems to be picking up momentum with a couple new video releases. The band bills themselves as country rock outfit and, with Echo Austin on lead vocals, I can definitely hear the “rock.” Check out their new video for Best of Me. Learn more about the band at arizonasunband.com, watch more their videos on their Youtube channel, and hear more of their music on Soundcloud.

3) Day Dates (Turn Into Night Dates) | Tony Holiday | Blues
by Jaime Winston

Utah native son and blues man extraordinaire Tony Holiday cowrote Day Dates for his new album Soul Service, with one of his favorite blues artist, John Nemeth. As Holiday tells us in his exclusive interview with the Bard, Nemeth hails from neighboring Idaho. Coincidentally, the two met up in Memphis where Holiday now lives. Soul Service hit number 9 in the Billboard Top US Blues Album chart, which is amazing since this is Holiday’s first solo effort. I can’t wait to see Holiday back in Utah, where his live shows seem to reach another level. In the meantime, buy Soul Service on Amazon and keep up with the man at tonyholidaymusic.com.

That’s it for this weeks song picks. Check back next week for more great local music picks.
