Every Tuesday the Bard editors post our favorite song discoveries from local artists around the Intermountain West. For an archive of past picks, check Song Picks of the Week.
1) “Long Live the Con Man” by The Pour | Genre: Rock
by Scott Cullins
The Pour describe their sound as a recipe of rock, funk, and soul. But like other bands I’ve reviewed for the Song Picks of the Week, I hear something a bit more progressive in this song. Is it me? I may be biased but it seems slightly progressive music is making a comeback. You can find the studio mix of “Long Live the Con Man” on Spotify, but I just love this live performance at the Cabin in Park City. I reached out to the band on social media and they told me they are working on new material and looking forward to playing as soon as possible. Listen to The Pour on Spotify, purchase their music on Apple Music and Google Play, and learn more about the band or buy merch at thepourband.com.
2) “My New Best Friend” by Neon Trees | Genre: Indie Rock
by Jaime Winston
I have been digging “New Best Friend,” my go-to track on Neon Trees’ new album, I Can Feel You Forgetting Me. Fit for Salt Lake’s dance clubs, it’s equally appropriate for one of those long, contemplative 2 a.m. drives home after a friend’s party on the other side of the valley or Wasatch Back. The lyrics seem to lend themselves to that exact situation, and the song is sure to play in your head as you wake up the next day. Outside Utah, it’s not common knowledge that Neon Trees formed in Provo. The pop rockers received mass exposure while playing with The Killers on a nationwide tour in 2008, and later with their single Animal, which hit number one on the Billboard alternative chart in 2010. I Can Feel You Forgetting Me is the band’s fourth studio album. Listen to their entire catalog on Spotify, buy their music on Apple Music and Google Play, watch their videos on Youtube, or learn more about the band and buy some merch at neontrees.com.
3) “One of a Kind” by JT Bevy | Genre: Rock
by Scott Cullins
I’ve been seeing posts about JT Bevy on social media for awhile now. I’ve heard snippets of their music here and there, but it wasn’t until my role here at Salt Lake Bard that I was basically forced me to listen to more music than I typically have time for…chained to by desk with headphones duct taped to my head. So when this video of JT Bevy—filmed live at the Royal this past July—crossed my digital path, I finally got a chance to listen to the band. JT Bevy puts on an impressive live performance and the sound at the Royal is about as good as it gets. Take a listen to “One of a Kind and let me know if you agree: these guys do a great job on this performance.” Listen to JT Bevy’s catalog on Spotify, buy their music on Apple Music and Google Play, or visit jtbevy.com to learn more.
That’s it for this weeks song picks. Check back next week for more great local music picks.
