Pixie and the Partygrass Boys Haunt the Urban Lounge

Despite the cold October, Halloween Eve night, Pixie and the Partygrass Boys played to a sold out crowd at a recent Urban Lounge outdoor parking lot show. I’m used to the cold, but it was cold enough that I couldn’t sit. I stood. I danced and I had a great time.

At one point, Katia (Pixie) Racine took off her big furry costume coat to play her uke and, suddenly, she’s bouncing around wearing a thin leotard. She must have been freezing her ass off, but the show must go on.

Some highlights for me include the band’s bluegrass rendition of Michael Jackson’s Thriller and a spirited performance by fiddler Amanda Grapes on a fiddle tune she composed (apologies…can’t remember the name of it). Bassist Zach Downs, mandolinist Ben Weiss and guitarist Andrew Nelson all had great moments.

But my favorite moment came when the band played Home, from their 2018 EP Utah Made. I loved the stripped down live version much more than I do the studio production—which vocally seemed to push more towards pop than bluegrass.

The sold out show had a lively crowd…many of them dressed for the occasion.

In all, it was a great performance—despite going from playing 3-4 times a week, to 3-4 times a month during the pandemic.

The Urban Lounge did a great job with this socially-distanced, masks-required outdoor event. There was great music, a great crowd and a bar. What else do we need?

According to S&S Presents, concerts at the Urban Lounge are moving indoors with socially distanced seating in family groups of 4 or more. This will be much different from past shows which has very little seating.

The group seating arrangement is a model we’ve seen at other events and it works well. The first time we saw this model was at the Pierpont Place VIP Experience shows we wrote about recently.

Check out our calendar for upcoming Salt Lake Bard-recommended shows the Urban Lounge and other Utah venues. The Bard curates content, which means if we include an event in our calendar, we know the artists personally and/or have seen the artists perform. As such, we can confidently state the show will be great.
