Song Picks of the Week – Sept. 29, 2020

Song Picks of the Week Salt Lake Bard

This week features Inner Mission by Superbubble, I Feel Free by Eixo and Frank Grimes by Scenic Byway.

Each week, Salt Lake Bard posts our favorite song discoveries — both new and old — from local artists around the Intermountain West. Check out our three picks below, find past selections in our archive of past Song Picks of the Week (SPW), and stream all of our picks on the Bard Spotify playlist or watch them on the Bard Youtube playlist.

1) “Inner Mission” | Superbubble | Funk

Last summer—the one in 2019—my buddy Zach told me he’d go with me to see Superbubble in concert. Then 2020 and COVID-19 came around and, well, it never happened. So now, my only option is to imagine seeing Superbubble live. Sigh. They have that jammin’ funky sound that I know would go well at an outdoor festival. I’ve been listening to the 2019 album Space Bound this past week and “Inner Mission” is such a great festival song. Horns, funky bass, disco guitar…it has it all. I’m just gonna have to wait a bit longer I guess. Meanwhile, you can stream Superbubble on Spotify, follow them on facebook, or purchase tunes on Apple Music. – Scott Cullins

2) “I Feel Free” | Eixo | Pop

“I Fell Fee” was co-written by Eixo and Jordan Clark. The artist known as Eixo is a Brazilian born songwriter and producer living in Utah and there seems to be quite a bit of mystery surrounding the artist. “I Feel Free” features Utah native Mackenzie Judd and was filmed using street footage taken around 700 S and 400 W in SLC, as well as additional footage shot by Mackenzie on her iPhone. A couple things drew me to “I Feel Free.” One of them was how similar my reaction to the video for “I Feel Free” was to Dua Lipa’s “Don’t Start Now.” Judd does a great job on this video and it’s clear Eixo has knack for spotting talent. Eixo will be performing live at Liquid Joes on October 23. I’ll be there for sure. Check out our calendar for this and other recommended live shows in the region. Stream Eixo on Spotify, watch on Youtube and follow on facebook or the Eixo website, eixo.band. – Scott Cullins

3) “Frank Grimes” | Scenic Byway | Electronic Hip Hop

I was planning to include “Used Noose,” in this week’s Song Picks becasue it’s a recent release from Scenic Byway with a cool video shot in SLC. However, I first got to know the band from listening to songs like “Frank Grimes” so I’m going with there. “Frank Grimes” has some great lyrics from Bradlee Lewis that have me chuckling every time I listen. With great vocals from Lewis and a couple others, combined with a cool beat and haunting trumpet, “Frank Grimes” is another easy pick for our weekly post. Stream Scenic Byway on Spotify, purchase and stream on Bandcamp, or follow them on facebook. We’ll be keeping tabs on Scenic Byway ad bring you more of their music soon. – Scott Cullins

That’s it for this weeks song picks. Check back next week for more great local music picks.
