Each week, Salt Lake Bard posts our favorite song discoveries — both new and old — from local artists around the Intermountain West. Check out our three picks below, find past selections in our archive of past Song Picks of the Week (SPW), and stream all of our picks on the Bard Spotify playlist or watch them on the Bard Youtube playlist.
1) Party Goblin | Nick Johnson | Acoustic Instrumental
If you haven’t heard Nick Johnson you are in for a treat. Johnson’s fingerstyle technique is amazing. You’ll swear your hearing two guitars as he plays licks and flourishes, while keeping a percussive rhythm going in the background. Hat tip to Trevor Rasmussen of Berlin Breaks, who introduced Nick to us via a fb shoutout. Follow Nick Johnson on Facebook, watch him on Youtube, visit nickjohnsonacoustic.com, and stream his music on Spotify and Apple Music. –Scott Cullins
2) Guns Out | Talia Keys & the Love | Soul-Funk-Rock n’ Roll
We’ve been sittin’ on this one for months. “Guns Out” is another favorite of ours, from Talia Keys and the Love, off their 2018 album “We’re Here.” Using a multitude of gun metaphors, like “locked and loaded” and “six shooter on my hip,” Talia sings about being ready to fight to save what seems to be love in jeopardy. “Guns Out” has a great ambient quality, with lots of groove and smooth backing vocals by Lisa Giacoletto. Take a listen. The band is smokin’ hot and I think you’ll like this song. (note: We also featured “Integrity” in an August SPW.) Learn more at taliakeys.com, listen on Spotify, watch on Youtube, or buy on Apple Music or Amazon. –Scott Cullins
3) Cherry | Rally | Indie Rock
We dig the what Provo Indie Rockers, Rally, have been up to lately. “Cherry,” off the 2020 “Summer’s End” EP, shines in the company of the other 3 tunes on the EP. And they say more is on the way, so we’re looking forward to hearing what’s coming in the near future. Follow Rally on Facebook, watch them in Youtube, stream on Spotify and Apple Music. –Freddie Torrance
