Song Picks of the Week – Sept. 1, 2020

Song Picks of the Week feat. Illicit Thoughts

This week features My Coffin by Illicit Thoughts, Red Sky Morning by by Audesi, feat. Tom Bennett and Bones by Penrose.

Each week, Salt Lake Bard posts our favorite song discoveries — both new and old — from local artists around the Intermountain West. Check out our three picks below, find past selections in our archive of past Song Picks of the Week (SPW), and stream all of our picks on the Bard Spotify playlist or watch them on the Bard Youtube playlist.

1) My Coffin by Illicit Thoughts | Metalcore
Norman Boland

Illicit Thoughts is a young metalcore band, influenced by great bands like Motionless in White, Polaris, Blessthefall and many more. Last October, the band released their debut EP and just a few weeks ago released My Coffin as their first single off their upcoming album. Before Covid hit, the band had been scheduled to open for national touring artists The Dead Rabbits. My Coffin comes from the perspective of a man speaking from a state of near death, with a mix of gritty, demon-like vocals that transition to a great chorus. Listen to Illicit Thought on Spotify, follow them in Instagram or watch them on Youtube.

2) Red Sky Morning | Audesi, feat. Tom Bennett | Rock
Scott Cullins

Tom Bennett is an authentic traveling folk blues singer, known in Utah for doing the one-man-band thing. Hailing from Georgia, Bennett calls Southern Utah home and has a unique voice and a bluesy acoustic style that is instantly recognizable. So when I stumbled on Red Sky Morning, literally hovering at the bottom of his Spotify page as an “appears on” link, I was kind blown away. Reminiscent of Peter Gabriel’s So, the song is heavily influenced by electronic instruments and ambient sounds…so different from his original, stripped down acoustic style. Check it out, as well as a few interesting remixes of the song. Listen to Tom Bennett on Spotify and follow him on facebook. Update: Tom says he’s touring pretty heavily…doing more private parties and motorcycle club events. Here’s a link to his Youtube channel, which is where a bulk of his music lives.

3) Bones | Penrose | Rock
Jaime Winston

Utah rockers Penrose jumped on the Zoom-call-style music video wagon with a video for their banger Bones last April. In the video, singer/former American Idol hopeful Madison Penrose shows she’s just as bad ass sitting on her bed with a cat in her lap as she is on stage. If the video leaves you humming “Gonna get dem bones,” consider catching the band live at Funk ‘n Dive in Ogden on Sept. 12. Listen to Penrose on Spotify and learn more about the band at the website, penroseband.com.

That’s it for this weeks song picks. Check back next week for more great local music picks.
