Every Tuesday, we post our favorite song discoveries — both new and old —from local artists around the Intermountain West. Check out the three picks below and then check out our archive of past Song Picks of the Week. (Note: We always try to include links to free streaming or video sites but it is not always possible.)
For this week’s picks, we opted to change things up a bit and go with holiday-themed music.
1) “A New Year Without You” | Clayton Smalley | Country Western
Clayton Smalley is a Country Western artist based in Spanish Fork, Utah. Smalley has that blue-collar appeal that seems to be a prerequisite for any Country Music artist to resonate with fans. In “A New Year Without You,” Smalley has a bit of a breakout hit on his hands. Nothing hits home like the nostalgia of Christmas song about a man, or woman, who struggles with a lost love. Learn more about Clayton Smalley at claytonsmalleymusic.com, stream his music on Spotify and Apple Music, watch on Youtube and follow him on Facebook. –Norman Boland
2) “Do You Hear What I Hear” | Performed by David Halliday and Kya Karine | Jazz
We’ve been wanting to get these two artists into the SPW rotation and, with this special holiday song edition, “Do You Hear What I Hear” provided the perfect opportunity. Off their 2019 release Christmas Fire, David Halliday and Kya Karine provide us with a great way to enjoy a smooth and classy Christmas. This is a wonderful rendition of the song, and I especially love the drums. I’m not a jazz aficionado, but I love the music and this rendition reminds me of a jazz style I love. The entire Christmas Fire album is on Spotify and should be put on your streaming rotation for the holidays. Learn more about David Halliday at davidhallidaymusic.com and stream his music on Spotify. Learn more about Kya Karine at bassprincessofficial.com and stream more of her music on Spotify. –Scott Cullins
3) “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy Mashup” | Performed by String FX | Classical
String FX is made up of Kaitlin Findlay on cello, Sarah Insalaco Olsen on violin, Anna Butler on viola, and Crista Shoemake on violin. For “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy Mashup”, the arrangement was done by Sarah Olsen and the video editing was done by Kaitlin Findlay. What a super-talented group of ladies. Check out more of their music on Spotify, and have yourself a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah and a happy New Year! –Scott Cullins
