Song Picks of the Week – December 29, 2020

SUnfish is the featured Artist in this edition of Song Picks of the Week

Featuring “Doors” by Sunfish, “The World is Flat Again” by Rose Colored Roots and “Sad Bitch” by Cera Gibson.

Each week, Salt Lake Bard posts our favorite song discoveries — both new and old — from local artists around the Intermountain West. Check out our three picks below, find past selections in our archive of past Song Picks of the Week (SPW), and stream all of our picks on the Bard Spotify playlist or watch them on the Bard Youtube playlist.

1) “Doors” | Sunfish | Alt Rock

This week we’re kicking off SPW with the song “Doors,” a 2020 single release from the band Sunfish. “Doors” may not one of band’s most popular songs but it is one of my favorites. I cried when it didn’t make the setlist for a recent live performance facebook video. I like to think Sunfish were channeling Band of Skulls when they recorded the song. Anyhow…I think this band is going places once we get past this pandemic bullshit. I also recommend you check out “Whatever” and “Not Gonna Make It”—which are also worthy of the Bard Spotify playlist. Open up the doors in your mind and get on the Sunfish Xpress, which stops at Kilby Court on Jan 8. Shoutout to Aggressive Audio for producing this one. Learn more about Sunfish on Facebook, stream them on Spotify and Apple Music, and watch on Youtube. –Scott Cullins

2) “The World is Flat Again” | Rose Colored Roots

Rose Colored Roots really nails it with “The World is Flat Again.” Off the 2020 release of the same name, the song has a funk/R&B feel that really takes me back in time and makes want to get up and dance. I get the same vibe from “Every Day I Get Up.” Fronted by lead singer Devin Moore, this five-piece band has carved out a nice little niche with their unique but familiar sound. Learn more about the band on Facebook, stream their music on Spotify, and Apple Music and watch them on Youtube. –Scott Cullins

3) “Sad Bitch” | Cera Gibson | Dark Pop

The first time I saw Cera Gibson was on a Salt Lilly live stream at Suite J in Salt Lake City. I was late for a show, so I didn’t make it past the interview. I remember Cera looked a bit awkward: standing there alone, with a guitar in her hands while she was interviewed. Despite that first impression, I followed up and I’m glad I did. In “Sad Bitch,” see below, Gibson comes off as sexy and nonchalante—reminding me a bit of Dua Lipa’s presence in “Don’t Stop Now.” Learn more about Cera at ceragibson.com, stream her music on Spotify and Apple Music, and watch on Youtube. –Scott Cullins
