Each week, Salt Lake Bard posts our favorite song discoveries — both new and old — from local artists around the Intermountain West. Check out our three picks below, find past selections in our archive of past Song Picks of the Week (SPW), and stream all of our picks on the Bard Spotify playlist or watch them on the Bard Youtube playlist.
Choke | IDKHow
IDKHow (AKA I Don’t Know How But They Found Me) is a Salt Lake-based duo made up of lead vocalist/bassist Dallon Weekes, formerly of Panic! at the Disco, and drummer/backing vocalist Ryan Seaman, formerly a member of Falling in Reverse. The 2018 single. Choke, is really more EMO to me, but it also feels like a fresh take on the New Wave music that almost killed Rock n Roll. It’s amazing how IDKHow can make lyrics like “I wouldn’t hesitate to smile as you suffocate” sound so damn fun. Ariel | Cavedoll (feat. Two Beards Productions)
Our next song pick comes from Cavedoll, an Eclectic-Indie-Pop-Glam-Prog band/collective led by Camden Chamberlain and based out of Salt Lake City. Ariel was released as a single in 2020 and feels a lot like something David Bowie would produce. The vocal is very Emo and song has plenty of ambient textures that make the song float along nicely. We recently had the pleasure of watch a Facebook livestream of Cavedoll at Boho Digitalia, with streaming support from Dave Crespo of Spirit Machines fame. Learn more about Cavedoll on Facebook, stream them on Spotify and Apple Music, and watch them on Youtube. – Scott Cullins
Better Now | Post Malone
Our final song pick, Better Now by Post Malone, is a gratuitous pick for the state Utah. Malone moved to Utah a couple years ago after a live show in the Beehive state became a “magical” event for the mega superstar. That Malone digs Utah is a testament to the great music scene here. We’re not even gonna post his links because his streaming plays are already in the billions. Enjoy…. – Scott Cullins
Our goal is to introduce the great Utah artists to the world. If you are an artists and would like to be featured on a future Salt Lake Bard Song Picks of the Week, please check out our submission requirements. And if you hear of anything you think we should be listening too, send it our way.
