Each week, Salt Lake Bard posts our favorite song discoveries — both new and old — from local artists around the Intermountain West. Check out our three picks below, find past selections in our archive of past Song Picks of the Week (SPW), and stream all of our picks on the Bard Spotify playlist or watch them on the Bard Youtube playlist.
1) “My Backwards Walk” | Carrie Myers & The Proper Way
Off the 2020 EP “All Is Not Lost,” Carrie Myers and The Proper Way cover “My Backwards Walk,” a tune from Scottish indie band Frightened Rabbit. This rendition has a great Old Time sound and everyone delivers a great performance on the production. You might have heard of Proper Way, which is made up of Scott Rogers and Shane Osguthorpe. The two produce Ogden City Limits, a video series featuring local artists dropping in to the studio to play and jam. Catch Ogden City Limits on Youtube, stream The Proper Way on Spotify and learn more about them at theproperwayband.com or on Facebook. –Scott Cullins
2) “Just Like Him” | Bellerose
Kelly Bellerose has been a favorite of ours since before we selected her to perform at the 2018 Intermountain Songwriters Showcase. “Just Like Him” is a brand new release and marks a slight pivot for Kelly, who says she will be focusing more on production and less on life performance. In addition to the two singles she just released, Kelly says she has two more coming soon, so stay tuned. Stream Bellerose on Spotify follow on Facebook, or purchase on Apple Music. –Scott Cullins
3) “What’s Supposed To Be” | Herban Empire | Alt-Reggae
The legendary Freddie Torrance turned me on to Herban Empire and the first thing I thought was ‘what a great name.’ Just the other day, we got a shoutout from Herban’s guitarist/vox Adam Lenkowski about “the Bard” Spotify playlist. This reminded me that we had “What’s Supposed To Be” in the que for another Song Pick of the Week. My very next thought was, ‘what are we waiting for?’ Everytime I listen to Herban Empire, I think of skiing and my next 420 tuneup in the trees. Learn more about Herban Empire oat herbanempire.com, stream Herban Empire on Spotify or Soundcloud, and purchase on Apple Music. –Scott Cullins
